About Pilates
Initially known as “Controlology”, Joseph Pilates created the Pilates method as an alternative to the usual approach to exercise. During World War I, he worked as a nurse and while caring for patients, he inadvertently created the Reformer machine. He initially created the Reformer as a way to help bedridden patients to stretch and tone their muscles.
It was only when Joseph Pilates moved to America in 1925 when he first opened his own studio devoted to the practice of Pilates. He began to amass a devoted following, especially among the dancers and performance artists in New York, who found his method the best way to recover from their injuries.
The rest, as they say, is history.
